Welcome to Doctorious!

Welcome to Doctorious!

This blog is being launched to document my doctoral diversions as a Ph.D. student in human and organizational systems at Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California. I envision it as a combination of personal journal, academic endeavor and professional platform.

I am pursuing this doctorate with the goals of teaching college communication, management and organizational development classes while consulting with companies to optimize their operations in addition to writing books to help empower others to do the same.

About the blog’s name: with a background in creative writing and marketing, the brand appeal of a name is important to me — in any context (academic, professional or personal). Even in the past when when I would write a fictional story, I struggled with the main title and character names before I could fully vest myself into the effort. I also have an admitted addiction to alliteration so that played into the equation as well.

The name I chose, Doctorious!, represents a combination of concepts as demonstrated by the following equation: doctorate + victorious + generous. You can read a more detailed explanation behind the “branding of this blog” on the page titled “Doctorious Defined.”

This is version 2.0 of my doctoral journey: I completed two semesters in an Ed.D. program in organizational leadership at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology. The Pepperdine program is undoubtedly solid, and my experience there helped me to more fully understand who I am and what my calling in life really is.

However, for various personal and professional reasons, I realized it was not the right fit for me nor would it enable me to fully realize my goal of becoming a university-level teacher and researcher. Nevertheless, I remain grateful for my experience there and remain in touch with many of my former classmates.

Educationally speaking, I also earned an MBA at Woodbury University in Burbank, CA and a BA in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara (where I graduated Phi Beta Kappa). Ironically, I wasn’t aware of Fielding until I learned about it from Martha “Marty” Mattare, a professor of management at Frostburg State University and my track chair at the 2007 conference of the International Academy of Business Disciplines where I presented a paper entitled, “H.I.G.H. O.C.T.A.N.E.  (Ten Additives that Power High Performance in Organizations).”

I am thankful for having been directed to Fielding; it seems to be the right fit for my present needs and future goals. I am also appreciative of the people and past experiences that have brought me to this point.  I look forward to making this blog interesting and entertaining, and welcome your comments, thoughts or even your own tales of being “Doctorious!”
